Pastor arrested at Wichita Pride
Pastor Mark Holick of Spirit One Christian Center and about 20 church members gathered at Sunday’s festival in Wichita’s Naftzger Park to distribute religious pamphlets and express their belief that homosexuality is a sin.
Thomas Witt, vice president of the Kansas Equality Coalition, told the Eagle that Holick’s presence was anticipated, especially after his arrest at the 2007 event on a charge of criminal trespass.
Although that charge was dropped, Holick later filed a federal lawsuit against the city, claiming his right to free expression was violated.
Because Pride organizers rent the park each year, they are allowed to control access to the event, Wichita Police Sgt. Lem Moore told the Eagle. About 1,000 people attended Sunday’s gathering, which offered vendors and music; a parade beforehand drew 100 marchers. Protesters may congregate on the adjacent public sidewalks, provided their actions do not constitute disorderly conduct.
This year, Holick bought a badge, but was arrested on suspicion of battery after striking Witt with it, the Eagle reported.
Police said witnesses told them that upon exiting, Holick removed the admission button, asked for his money back and threw it at Witt, striking him in the arm.
