Political chatter and a tribute to Bea Arthur

Lots to talk about and most of it not so funny this week…sorry…

Bullet Proof

Yesterday’s surprise defection by longtime Republican Senator Arlen Specter puts the Democrats within one seat of a filibuster proof majority.

While Democrats alike are jumping for joy at this turn of events, you maybe surprised to know that I’m not as happy.  Don’t get me wrong, part of me loves the fact that this Clarence Thomas loving dumbass was forced to switch parties…and make no mistake about it, Specter’s decision is politically motivated because his State is once again falling back into the Democratic ranks.  For the past few election cycles, the great state of Pennsylvania was a true toss-up state despite the fact that a Democrat leads both the State and Capital city. During last year’s Presidential election, the Obama campaign was responsible for converting 200,000 registered Republicans into Registered Democrats…which is partly why Pennsylvania was called earlier than anyone elected on election night for the President.

Don’t get me wrong, while I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m an Arlen Specter fan, he is one of few Republicans who I believe has a conscience and tends to vote using it.  That’s not to say he hasn’t fallen in line with the rank and file, but in politics this is what you do if you want to become one of the chosen few.  And it’s this conscience that will not make Specter a party line Democratic voter, so 60 isn’t really a guarantee as far as I’m concerned.

Speaking of 60…the reason why I’m not as thrilled as most are at this unexpected development is simple – historically too much of one party is never a good thing.

Now I love my party…I believe in my party and I believe my party IS the true conscience our Country.  However, it’s for this very reason that my party just isn’t smart.  So when the time comes for a Republican revolution…and trust one…there will be one at some point, it won’t be because the Democrats got too greedy.  It’ll be because Democrats don’t possess true vision.  They simply want to make the world a better place for all.  Granted, that is a vision.  But this vision is never backed up with a plan.  Take healthcare for example…this issue at been at the forefront of every Democratic administration and Congress…and yet here we are with the same broken system…if you can even call it that.

The Republicans, while, yes, are cruel and calculating – always have a vision and plan…and I’ll be honest with you, I admire them for it. Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America and the push to get people to believe Iraq was involved with 9/11 are prime examples of what I’m talking about.  When he led the Republican revolution of 1994, Newt did so by devising the Contract and getting every member of the party in-line with the principles of the plan.  They then went out and sold the plan.  It was like watching the workings of a naval sub.  When the Captain spoke, the XO’s voice was heard right after repeating word for word the Captain’s orders.  When the Bush Administration set out to include Iraq in its war against terror, again when the Capitan spoke, the XO and all of the lesser officers repeated word for word what the Capitan said.  This is why if you walk the streets of NYC and ask 10 people if Iraq had anything to do with 9/11, 5 out of 10 of them will still say yes.  Thankfully, this is down from 9 out of 10 because the facts have won over the lies and people have begun to realize that maybe we weren’t so crazy in 2004 when we said George Bush needed to go.  Notice I said weren’t SO crazy – we did nominate John Kerry…but I digress.

Only time will tell whether this Democratic government will enjoy a long life. As I’ve said in the past, President Obama’s two greatest problems are Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.  Neither of these Democratic “leaders” has a lick of political sense.  They are TURE Democrats as they have shown they have no plan or vision.  Unless of course they’re pulling a Muhammad Ali rope-a-dope and are just waiting for someone to challenge them so they can deliver a knockout punch.  I don’t see this happening.  If they continue to sit back and act as a rubber stamp for the President, the people will revolt.  They need to separate themselves as much as possible from the Executive Branch and function as such.  Again, I have my doubts that either of them have the ability to do this, but I guess only time will tell.

And politically speaking, with the Democrats holding all the cards and power…they will have no one to blame should things not work out.  Granted, the President has made it clear he is prepared to face the consequences should this happen, but without a Congress working with but independent from the White House…both are doomed to fail if the polices being put in place now don’t work…which as we all know is what that fat bastard Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the followers are praying for…the great Americans they are.

Norm Watch

On this, the 177th day since Al Franken defeated Norm Coleman to become the junior Senator from the State of Minnesota, Coleman continues to make the case that the fight will go on until all the votes have been counted, recounted and then counted yet again until the numbers favor him.

New to the mix, is a man who was on the short list to be John McCain’s running mate last year Minnesota’s Governor Tim Pawlenty.  Pawlenty, who quite frankly IS the male version of Sarah Palin, said this when asked about whether or not he’s ready to certify Al Franken the winner of  the Senatorial election, "We're going to follow the law with respect to the Franken-Coleman litigation on when and how a certificate is issued."  Of course I immediately wondered, what law is he waiting to follow?  Every court in Minnesota has declared Franken the winner, except for the Supreme Court.

Well, Pawlenty it appears is willing to wait until Coleman has yet another appeal heard — this time before the Minnesota Supreme Court.  Oral arguments are scheduled to begin June 1st, which at the point means the election will be over 200 days old.  Really….really?

That’s a damn shame.

What’ll I do?

When word came on Saturday that the legendary Bea Arthur had passed away earlier in the day, I felt like someone had punched me in the stomach. I was shocked, stunned and profoundly saddened by the news.  And as I said to several friends, it was like losing a member of the family.  My reaction also bought me to tears in the form of laughter as I realized the late great Estelle Getty was reaching out to me in her Sophia persona and yelling at the top of her lungs, “She was 86!”  (Only true fans of the Golden Girls will understand what that means 🙂

I remember as a child watching Maude and thinking how funny this woman was.  Granted, 90% of the jokes were over my head — but Bea Arthur had such presence that she didn’t even need to speak in order for you to laugh at a joke.  And her scenes with the late great Esther Rolle to this day are classics that will always be funny.

Now for those who know me well, you know that I AM one of the biggest Golden Girls fans on the planet.  There isn’t an episode that I can’t recite at least ½ the lines of each of the fantastic ladies who gave us 7 wonderful years of laughter.  Quite frankly, it was and always will be one of the funniest shows to ever grace the small screen.

Hallmark Channel is honoring Bea all week with “Dorothy” related episodes and will run an all-day marathon on Sunday in her honor.  Do yourself a favor and catch a few episodes.  If you can’t find one or two scenes to laugh at in any episode you watch, then you don’t know what’s funny.

In the meanwhile, listen to this quick clip of Bea Arthur telling the ladle joke – http://www.ng21.co.uk/gg/savoy/ladle.mp3

100 Days

Four score and 100 days ago today, Barack Obama was sworn in as President of the United States. Big day…big, big milestone of a day.

Now, it has been said that the media makes more of a big deal out of this milestone than anyone one, which begs the question…AND?  I mean, doesn’t the media dictate what is/isn't a big deal in our lives?

I'm just saying…

Cue the Music and Open the Doors…

Here’s an idea….let’s fly one of the biggest planes in the world, at a low altitude in downtown New York…without telling anyone beforehand.

To be honest, I don’t even know where to begin with this one.  But before I get to where I don’t’ know where to start from, I have two words all the Republicans and those like them who are shouting the loudest about the price tag of this stupid idea…shut up.  This idea wasn’t THAT stupid.  They didn’t just put the plane in the air to take a damn picture, so can we stop trying to capitalize on an event that truly scared the bejesus out of a lot of people?

Of all the stupid, thoughtless and boneheaded ideas…this one comes close to topping the cake.  I can’t even find a joke or movie reference that I want to associate with this scatterbrained “classified” idea.

That said it is without honor that I welcome every person associated with this colossal miscue to the Dumbass Hall of Fame.  Me thinks y’all will be the belles of the ball for a longtime to come.

From the files of you can’t make this sh*t up….
