How Did They Vote?

In what can only be described as a shameful vote down party lines the US Senate today passed The Matthew Shepard Act, which provides new authority for federal officials to work in partnership with state and local law enforcement to more effectively address hate crimes.

What's shameful is of the 40 Republican members of the US Senate, only 5 of them voted to pass this all important legislation; 28 of them voted no and the other 7 didn't cast a vote.

While shameful, sadly it's not surprising.  This is just another example of the Republican Party putting their ridiculous Bible thumping ideology above that of common sense, decency and the protection of those who in 2009 are STILL unable to live their lives openly and freely due in large part to those who promote and in some cases preach hate.

That said, today's vote is a victory that far overshadows the narrow-mindedness of Republicans and those who share their views.  

When President Obama signs the bill into law, Matthew Shepard will have once again been beacon for awareness and change.  Nothing will ever change the dreadful and heinous actions which caused his death, nor should we ever truly forget them.  But when the ink dries making The Matthew Shepard Act the law of the land, those who choose hate and violence to showcase their ignorance will finally be punished not only for their physical actions, but for the hateful thoughts which caused them to act in such a vile and unlawful manner.
