So the Sunday political shows were a buzzing yesterday with the racial allegations former president Jimmy Carter brought up last week during an interview. It appears the general consensus is he’s wrong…that most of the backlash against President Obama is based on his policies and not the color of his skin.
Really??
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the backlash is AS racially motivated as President Carter suggests, but I certainly find it hard to gloss over certain things/issues…
The birthers
Yesterday marked the eighth month anniversary of President Obama taking the oath of office and yet there are still people out there claiming that he’s not a natural born citizen and thus shouldn’t be President of the United States. Now I’m sorry, if he weren’t black or had a name like Barack Obama, this conversation WOULD NOT STILL be taking place. Idiotic members of Congress such as Rep. Jean Schmidt, (R-OH), who recently whispered, "I agree with you, but the courts don't" to a disillusioned woman at a rally who was distraught over the fact that Obama is the President and kept repeating, "even though the Constitution says he can not be by law," are fanning the flames of an issue that has gone well beyond stupid. My oh my how quickly we’ve forgotten what a cardinal sin (aka un-American) it was to to simply question the actions of President George W. Bush when he sat behind the big desk. The slightest cross word about Bush and you were branded un-American. But fat bastard (Rush Limbaugh) and his side mouth Glenn Beck can openly call the President of the United States a racists who hates white people and get away with it? Where is the outrage…other than from liberals or people who pay attention?
Healthcare
Now I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and as directly as possible…the President and the Democrats have fucked this issue up but good. On what planet other than ours would be it such a horrible idea to fix our broken healthcare system AND find a way to make sure all citizens have good quality healthcare — other than the planet Vulcan maybe (which I firmly believe is where most of the birthers come from).
Death Threats
All Presidents receive death threats, but when was the last time you remember it being acceptable that a person shows up to a rally with a gun to protest against the President of the United States? Are you fucking kidding me? Maybe acceptable isn't the right word. But really carrying a loaded fire arm to a demonstration? I don't even think that would be acceptable on Vulcan.
Now these are just a few of the MANY issues that nuts across the country are using to make their point that the President is unfit to sit in office. So its hard not to ask yourself are these people really just nutty and hate the fact that a Democrat is back in the White House trying to fix the messes that were left behind by a Republican President, or are there serious racial undertones here that are being swept under the carpet because we don’t want to believe that our nation still discriminates against a person based on the color of their skin?
Whatever the case maybe, as much as the White House (and the media in general) would like the issue to go away, it’s not going to just go away — so can we please just deal with it and not pretend that it doesn’t exist? The more we hide from it the worse it’s going to get. And quite frankly, since I and millions of same-sex citizens are STILL waiting our turn to be given rights that are already ours but not recognized, we’d appreciate the chance for the debate to be put into play…for lack of a better term.
Racism and discrimination go hand in hand. A person who doesn’t have a problem saying ‘nigger’ sure has hell doesn’t have a problem calling someone a ‘faggot’ because in their warped mind…both individuals are less than they are. So I say let’s stop pretending that the media is behind all which is brewing and deal with it before it’s too late.
