Last night I watched portions of HBO’s documentary “Outrage” which takes a look at several alleged "self-hating" closeted gay politicians and how their actions in their respective positions of power have hurt the gay community.
First and foremost I truly hate the term “gay community.” I think it only enhances the discrimination close minded individuals are trying to make the law of the land, but as usual I digress.
The documentary takes in-depth looks at several Republican (and several Democratic) politicians and they’re supposed known gay extra curricular activities while detailing their steadfast and pathetic voting record when it comes to gay rights, HIV/AIDS funding…pretty much anything having to do with the word gay. It’s quite interesting and disturbing all at the same time. But sadly, none of it was all that surprising.
However, having just watched the episode of Glee where Kurt finally comes out to his friends and father, watching ‘Outrange’ pissed me off more than it should have.
Let’s face it, the Larry Craig’s of the world didn’t just started getting caught in men’s room stalls looking for sex…this is something that has been going on for decades. Priests have been fondling little boys for years and because of that, all things ‘gay’ are deemed deviant. Well, school teachers having sex with their students is just a deviant as Priests touching alter boys so shouldn’t we brand all “straight people’ deviants? Where exactly do we draw the line?
The bottom line is this — if we just got our act together and passed the necessary legislation to grant gays the rights that have already been afforded to us by the Constitution, all of this nonsense would eventually go away.
So, on this the evening of the 11th anniversary of Matthew Sheppard being brutally beaten and left for dead simply for being gay, let us all commit to doing what we can to ensure that America is TRULY the land of the free and the home of the brave for ALL of its citizens.
And if you're not already watching Glee…you SHOULD! It is a fantastic show. Wednesday nights on FOX – http://www.fox.com/glee/
And catch a rebroadcast of the HBO documentary Outrage. It's worth seeing – http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/outrage/index.html
