There is no easy answer

The question I’m getting the most this morning is why…why with all the accomplishments of the past 21-months did Republicans win last night.

The answer isn’t simple, but it’s telling.

Despite the fact that the President and Democrats prevented the country from experiencing a second depression, people are still hurting.  And despite all the facts, Republicans were able to ride the wave of fear and anger (as misrepresented as it is) to take over the House of Representatives. The fact remains, the President and the Democrats haven’t been able to get unemployment under 9% and while the record will always show that they accomplished a great deal of important and groundbreaking legislative successes, people are out of work and scared.

So what now? Well, Republicans have to come up with the magical answers they have yet to present to the American people. It no longer matters that they were the ones who created the economic disaster we’re still recovering from. The people have spoken and it’s time for action.

And so a new chapter begins. Today at 1 p.m. we will find out if President Obama has the ability to regroup and find a way to continue on the path of returning the country to economic prosperity. Granted, he will need to find common ground with the Republicans, and together they will have to work on easing the fears of the American people.

But make no mistake about it, this notion of repealing health care reform that the Republicans keep boasting about is a non starter. If the President and the Democrats think they had a bad night last night, they won’t know what hit them if they roll over and play dead the next two years. We the people will not stand for a trip back to the land of make believe that the Republicans have been promising for the past few months. President Obama needs to raise his voice and stand firm for what is right for this country…and that includes ALL of the legislative accomplishments of the 111th Congress, and many of the promises he has yet to fulfill, because the only repeal this White House and the Democrats better find a way of making happen is Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Thanks as always for reading. More tomorrow after the dust settles.
