CJ's 2010 Lists – Top 10 Songs of 2010 — #8
You know the drill…over the next 9 days (I'll be skipping Christmas Day), I'm posting my top songs of 2010.
As a reminder — the criteria for my selections are basted on three simple facts…
1. How many months did a song make it to my monthly iPhone playlist;
2. How many plays does it have in my iTunes;
3. The song must have been released no later than October of the previous year.
The list continues…
Some may find this weird, but I've actually never heard either of the songs tied for number 8, on this year's countdown, on the radio. Thankfully…that's not one of the requirements I've set for determining which songs make my countdown. Instead, I was introduced to both songs while watching television.
I heard the first song while watching an episode of the Showtime series The Big C. If you don't watch the show, all I can say is you're missing out on something special. The series stars Laura Linney as a woman (Cathy), who learns she has terminal cancer in the very first episode, and follows her journey as she tries to enjoy what time she has left, while coping with the difficulties of coming to terms with how and when to tell your loved ones. Needless to say there were very few episodes that didn't leave me close to tears or full out bawling…as I did during the season finale.
In episode 4, Cathy makes a impulsive purchase after withdrawing all of her savings from her 401k account — a beautiful red Mustang convertible. At the end of the episode, she parks the car in a storage facility and leaves a birthday card addressed to her son Adam…wishing him first "a happy 18th birthday', but changes her mind…crossing out "18th" and replacing in with "30th."
I don't really think my explanation does the scene justice, so here it is just as I saw it…
And here's a link to the full version of my first of two #8 songs for 2010 – Alex Cornish's "Don't Hold Me Back"
To be honest I only heard this next song because I got home from work super late (nothing new there), and turned on the TV just as the amazing Christina Aguilera was just being introduced by Jay Leno. Now I have to admit, I've never considered myself a huge fan of Christina's, but me thinks I need to change that, because when I do think about it, I realize I love quite a few of her songs — Beautiful, Voice Within, Hurt and Dirrty to name a few.
I think what first attracted me to this song was her performance on the Tonight Show. It was a reminder of how amazing her voice truly is. The song is from the motion picture Burlesque, which marks Christina's first major role in a movie and the return, of sorts, to the screen by the legendary Cher.
As was the case with 'Don't Home Me Back' this song became a must hear multiple times on a daily basis as soon as I heard it. And while it doesn't have the longevity of most of the songs on the countdown, (the Burlesque album was released on November 22nd) it certainly has the number iTunes plays. I can not lie…I have played this song to DEATH. And still love it.
The second of my two #8 songs of 2010 is – 'Bound to You.'
