POLL: ‘Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag’ Which Version is Best?

Velma and Roxie…those names may not ring a bell right away to many people, but how about when you put them with names such as Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking, Liza Minnelli, Gwyneth Paltrow and Lea Michele?

Hopefully by now you realize Velma and Roxie are the (alleged) murderesses from hit Broadway show (and movie) Chicago. If not, for shame!!!!

Based on a play (of the same name) about the 1924 trials of Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner, Chicago the musical follows the lead-up to and trials of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, who are thrust into the headlines for the sensational murders they are accused of committing.

The show's score coupled with Bob Fosse’s sophisticated choreography are two of the many reasons why Chicago holds the record for longest-running musical revival on Broadway and is loved by millions worldwide.

One of the popular numbers from the show appears towards the end, as Velma and Roxie make their triumphant return to the spotlight in a fantastic song and dance stage show, “that features not only one little lady, but two.”  The number combines two songs, ‘Nowadays’ (sung by both Velma and Roxie) and Fosse’s masterpiece the ‘Hot Honey Rag.’

Since its premiere on Broadway in 1975, a great many talented ladies have taken on the roles of Velma and Roxie, originated by Chita and Gwen, both of whom I still believe are the best.

But I’m curious, which version of ‘Nowadays/Hot Honey Rag’ do you like best?

Below are four versions… (unfortunately only the original and revival versions feature Fosse’s amazing Poetry in Motion…two moving as One…but don't let that influence your decision)…

The original featuring Chita and Gwen

The revival featuring Bebe Neuwirth and Karen Ziemba

The movie version featuring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger

The abridged version featured on Glee with Gwyneth Paltrow and Lea Michele

At the very least, watch and enjoy four fantastic versions of an iconic Broadway number!

  1. Why would you put the Glee clip with these? I like Glee but it doesn’t belong! Movie version is the best
