…14-year old Jamey Rodemeyer felt he had no other option but to kill himself.
I’m struggling to understand why one year after Tyler Clementi took his own life because his roommate streamed his intimate encounter over the Internet with another man, we seem to be nowhere on this growing epidemic.
I’m struggling to understand why people are willing to line up outside a medical facility to taunt and threaten women and doctors…all in the name of “preserving life,” but when it comes to protecting those who have been given life, and are in desperate need of love and attention, they look the other way mostly because of their ridiculous beliefs. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but when they decide who is worthy of being saved and who is not, then their beliefs are ridiculous to me. Either all life is precious…or its not.
The hypocrisy of America has hit a new low, and while all I want to do is call out the Michele Bachmann’s, Rick Perry’s, Pat Robinson’s and those who follow their evil, misguided and stupid “teachings,” our kids are dying. Spewing my venom at these vile individuals and their follwers isn’t going to stop the next kid who feels like he/she has no other choice.
We’re up against so much, it’s hard to know what to do. You have people on the one hand who STILL believe there is no such thing as bullying — that it’s a made up issue. Then on the other, you have those who want to protect those who bully, because in their warped mind, punishing those who bully is infringing on their right to free speech. Just writing that last sentence makes me want to punch something/someone.
I’m angry and I’m scared. Angry because with all that we know…with all the organizations that are out there trying to tackle this problem…we seem to be getting no where…and fast, because the Jamey Rodemeyer’s are still taking their own lives. And I’m scared because too many people are STILL to disassociated with this issue.
I don’t know what it’s going to take, but I know that I personally have to do something. And I think that something in the first instance is to write a letter to First Lady Michelle Obama this weekend. We need her to bring awareness to this issue just as she has in the fight against childhood obesity.
I will post my letter to the First Lady in hopes it will inspire others to follow. One letter a letter can be strong enough to be heard — dozens more…even stronger.
I don’t like feeling helpless, and it’s only a matter of time before we lose another precious life, so let’s get to work!
