Well, unless you live in a cave, my number 1 song for 2011 won’t come as a major surprise to anyone.
It was a song that was intended to and did, give voice to millions of people across the world. It empowered and gave many, the strength to be who they are despite the few in society who continue to try to keep them down.
Sadly, in some cases, while the message of the song was helpful, there were still many unnecessary deaths as a result of bullying by young people and “grown-ups” alike. Young Jamey Rodemeyer is just one of many “Little Monsters” who embraced Lady Gaga’s message earlier this year, only to lose hope soon after, and take his own life.
But the power of the song, its message and its messenger took the fight for equality to a new heights in 2011. There is still much work to be done, but at least now there is an anthem to help lead the way.
I’m dedicating this year’s number 1 song to Jamey and to all the Little Monsters in the world who need to remember – there’s nothing wrong with you; you are not unworthy, disgusting or Godless…and you’re certainly NOT sick.
You are who you “cause baby, you were Born This Way.”
