It’s like we’ve never been through this before…a major celebrity death. But alas, the anti-Whitney posts are starting to creep in. I guess because she was a celebrity who while bringing joy to millions of people across the globe, couldn’t fight off the demons that we all know most likely ended her life at 48…we’re all supposed to have moved on by now.
Well it doesn’t really work that way. So for those of you who are sick of the Whitney coverage, I don’t really know what to tell you. Is it oversaturating, of course it is. But like I said, it’s not as if this is new, and despite the fact that she was a drug addict — a mother lost her child, a child lost her mother and the world lost a voice that touched millions of people — three days ago. We’re sorry you’re over it, but others may need a little more time…even for someone like Whitney Houston.
But it would really be nice if we could stop pretending that the outpouring of grief for Whitney has anything to do with any kind of lack of support for our brave men and women who die protecting our freedoms. More and more this excuse is brought to light at times like this and frankly is quite dishonorable. I would suggest if you have a problem with the way we mourn our Military, you take it up with Military Brass who have set forth rules that have made it virtually impossible to mourn openly, our brave soldiers lost in battle. Because until those rules (which by the way were put into place to provide maximum protection for the grieving families) are changed, there will never be similar type of outpouring of grief for our returning fallen heroes.
Life isn’t really as complicated as many make it out to be. I love my country and give thanks to our brave soldiers who protect our freedoms while sacrificing their lives. But I also loved me some Ms. Whitney Houston and her loss, while not terribly surprising, is still tragic and very sad.
See…it is possible to be respectful to more than one thing or person at a time.
