“I believe all Americans who believe in freedom, tolerance and human rights have a responsibility to oppose bigotry and prejudice based on sexual orientation.”
“I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
“I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream to make room at the table of brother- and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.”
– A sampling of quotes from Coretta Scott King, widow of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Even rereading those words from Mrs. King can’t stop the feeling of becoming somewhat disillusioned, frightened and sad that the term ‘ignorance is bliss’ seems to be gaining momentum.
Here’s what I think it boils down to…maybe all those who A) Never had to hide who they really were for fear of being treated like an outcast; B) Don’t know what it’s like to hear people say you’re going to hell for simply loving someone or better yet…you’re not a Christian if you love someone of the same sex; and C) Have never faced the reality of falling in love only to be told you can not marry the person you love because somehow your love is less than other people’s…are right.
Or….discrimination is discrimination.
It certainly can’t be both. Not even a little bit.
