Artist and Number One Song(s) of 2012

Before we get to number one, I just want to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone for all the comments for this year’s countdown and for just reading my Blog in general. It’s very humbling.

To recap the countdown thus far….

And now…number one……

There are going to be as many people who agree and disagree with my number one song(s) of the year, and that’s OK for two reasons. First, for me, the pick was a no-brainer, because the singer of this/these songs in the top spot…is also my artist of the year.

Second, commercially, this artist was somewhat of an enigma this year. Some people, me included, love her sound – lyrically and musically. Others find it to be boring and unflattering. I understand both positions.

To be honest, I don’t even remember how I came across her. What I do know is the first song I heard “Million Dollar Man,” fit right in with my “familiar sounds” of the year theme, in an odd way. True, it wasn’t a song I knew, but it felt very familiar to me from the first time I heard it. The sound was very retro…almost 60’s-like…and I started listening to it over and over and over. Around the same time, two of my Facebook friends started posting about her, which promoted me to listen to her album. The love affair was on from there.

‘Born to Die’ was hands down the album I listen to the most this past year. From start to finish, I listened to that album at least 2-3 times a week, and even more than that in the beginning.

Unless you’ve lived in a cave this year, it should be clear the artist I writing about is Lana Del Rey. Two of her songs spent a significant time on my monthly playlists this year, and were both played “to death” by me throughout the year.

And so my number 1 songs of 2012 are – “Million Dollar Man” and “Blue Jeans.”
