This past Sunday, University of Missouri’s standout defensive lineman, Michael Sam told the world that he is gay…an admission he made to his Missouri teammates some 5-months ago.
After sharing that nugget of information with his teammates, Missouri went on to have an incredible season, finishing 12-2 and winning the Cotton Bowl. Surprisingly, all hell did not break loose. A team full of young college boys hoping to make a name for themselves in the NFL one day, actually managed to succeed…despite the “distraction” of Michael’s sexual orientation.
Maybe that’s a bit harsh. I mean, clearly this team was able to accept Michael for who he is – a stellar football player…who also happens to be gay. All that seemed to matter to them was winning, and by focusing their attention on the field, they achieved success.
Imagine that!
So what does it say about the National Football League, that several of its General Managers have since said, anomalously, I might add, that his “revelation” will most likely drop Sam down a few pegs in the upcoming NFL draft because teams will be wary of the “distraction” to the team?
I don’t know about you, but it seems rather strange to me that a group of grown men, being paid millions of dollars to play the game of football, will be more distracted than a bunch of college boys who play the same game for free. That just doesn’t seem to make sense now…does it?
Now I get it…Missouri was able to focus all season without the world knowing about Michael’s alleged “distraction.” But again, why would a group of grown men, being paid millions of dollars to play a game, allow something like this to “distract” them…and if it did/does, doesn’t that say something more about them? Especially if Michael is playing to his full potential?
Which brings me back to my question…when is enough going to be enough?
How much longer are we going to allow the vocal immature minority to dictate what our country is/isn’t ready for? How much longer are we going to stand for people being discriminated against simply for breathing…because quite frankly, unless you’re being forced to have sex with someone of the same sex, it shouldn’t matter to you.
I truly hope people will ponder this question seriously, because until we do, we’re allowing this minority free rein to continue to trample over the principles OUR Country was founded on.
We are either a Country that promotes freedom for all of its law abiding citizens…or we’re not.
We can’t have it both ways.
