[Note: Before reading, please understand…this is a posting about loss of life and my fears of where we are headed as a culture in dealing with these losses. It is not a statement for or against either side in the conflict.]
Since that fateful election in January 2006 when Hamas won a decisive majority in the Palestinian Parliament, it has been hard to refrain from saying to the Palestinian people – ARE YOU NUTS? But I live in a country that elected George W. Bush President 1 ½ times, so who am I to talk.
That having been said, people like myself who are outraged over the massive killing of innocent people during the recent engagement between Israel and Hamas, are not anti-Semitic. We are simply horrified at the casualties that are mounting up on both sides. I am and always have been a firm believer and supporter of Israel’s right to protect itself from a faction of people who want nothing more but wipe them off the map. But I find it a bit hypocritical and somewhat amazing…the lack of attention that is being paid to some of these strikes that are killing innocent women and children.
If the United States ever bombed a school that killed scores women and children, the world response of condemnation would swift — and rightfully so. Now I realize these gutless so-called “martyrs” are purposefully hiding among women and children in hopes of escaping the punishment they deserve, but are we as a society actually ready to look past the killing of women and children – in order to get them? God….I hope not.
I’ll be the first to admit…I, like many, don’t have a clue what the answer is. But I’m NOT afraid to say I am as outraged and sadden at the thought of innocent people being killed in Gaza as I am about three innocent Israeli teenagers being killed or the scores of innocent people who have been murdered over the years while simply riding a bus in Jerusalem.
