“I have to be strong for my wife. She is so strong. We are in good spirits. We have a lot of people praying for us and we’ll continue to support each other. I have to be there for (Janay) and my family right now and work through this.”
That was the statement Ray Rice made last night while on the phone with ESPN’s Josina Anderson, for what is believed to be his first statement since he was fired by the Ravens and suspended by the NFL.
OK….where is the part where you accept responsibility for your actions? Where is the part where, while being there for your wife, you apologize for striking her in the first place? Where is your apology to your teammates and organization for the massive distraction you have caused? Where is your apology to the league (which failed miserably in handling this situation) and lastly to your fans?
Yes Mr. Rice. I agree with you 100% — you should not make any further comments or statements until you hire someone, like me, to help you get through this. Once you do, you will at the very least be made to appear that you understand that you and you alone are to blame for this mess. Once you do, you will at the very least be made to come off as human and not like a deer caught in the headlights. And, once you do, we will have some assurance that someone other than you, is looking after Janay.
I hate to tell you this Mr. Rice, but your concern for your wife while admirable, is without merit. It’s not hard to believe that she still loves you and that together the two of you are trying to work through this, but until you take responsibility for your reprehensible actions, statement’s from Janay regarding her devotion to you and anger at the media, will not get you off the hook. You see, sadly, battered women often tend to support those who beat them much in the way like like kidnap victims sympathize with their captors. So you see, her statements come off as suspect, not devotion.
So the best thing you can do Mr. Rice is get yourself some help — legal and PR representation for certain, but if you really want to start turning things around, go to counseling and become a better man.
That is how this all goes away.
