It’s been 6,008 days since America was attacked and shaken to its core.
I have dear friends who lost loved ones on that day, so that’s not a sentence I toss about carelessly.
Things I remember from that day…
- Hearing about the first plane hitting the first tower as I got into a taxi to go to the train station.
- Watching the second plane hit the second tower from the coffee shop at the train station
- STILL getting on the train to NYC, knowing the City was under attack
- Our train stopping, within clear view of the burning towers…and then watching the first tower disappear
- Our train reversing and taking me back home
- Getting on the bus for home, getting off at my stop and walking home…only to duck for cover when I heard a plane fly above (it was a fighter jet)
Every time I think about that last memory, I remember the absolute terror I felt as I ducked into a parking garage.
Ever since that awful day, many mass transit stations, here in New York City and elsewhere, are now guarded by armed by members of the police and military — guns on the ready in the event of an attack. Yes, you get used to seeing them…from a distance. And while I won’t speak for anyone else, when I walk past them…I always notice.
I notice the rifles and the fact that the person holding it, has his/her hands on at all times. Do I feel safe knowing they are there? I honestly can’t say that’s the exact feeling I experience.
So imagine a child being forced to see armed guards everyday…at school. Am I the only one who finds that completely and totally fucking ridiculous?
Sure, a child may find it cool to see armed guards. Sure they may find it cool to be able to see the guns up close. But is this REALLY what we want for our children?
Instead of making it harder, or God forbid illegal for a civilian to own a weapon of mass destruction like an AR-15, the NRA thinks we (normal people), don’t care enough about our children because we’re resistant to having our schools surrounded by armed guards.
Their narrative is that we (normal people), care more about celebrities, sporting events, jewelry, (I’ve forgotten the other items) than we do our children, because those places are all well guarded.
Their logic is by having armed guards, mass murderers will “think” twice about attacking a “soft target” like a school.
Please…I’m not going to debate or rant and rave about how idiotic this idea is.
I’m not going to point out that having more guns at schools makes it more likely that more people will get shot.
I’m not going to point out that if we (normal people) stand up and vote the bastards, who seem to care more about the NRA’s money than they do about our children, out of office…we (normal people) could do more than just talk about sensible gun control every time a school, concert or other public place get shot up.
But I hope you will.
You can start by reaching out to your representatives and tell them how you feel and more importantly, how you plan to vote based on their ACTION to stop mass shootings from happening. Feel free to use the links below to find your representatives.

Remember, if we don’t do our part to solve this crisis…WE are part of the problem.
The time is NOW.
