After weeks of good news in the battle for equality, today is a setback — although it's not very surprising the CA Supreme Court upheld the Proposition 8. In its 4-3 ruling last year, when the court invalidated California's marriage statute — holding that denying same-sex couples the right to wed amounted to state-sanctioned discrimination they also hinted that it would be difficult to invaildate the will of the people should a ballot initiative be approved. However, given the narrowness of the "majority" vote (52-48) on Prop. 8, I am somewhat shocked that the Justices voted 6-1 in favor of upholding the proposition.
So, today we'll hurt — as a people and as a nation. But tomorrow, the battle must and will continue for as the Rev. Dr. Martin luther King Jr. once said, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."
In the end, equality will always triumph over bigotry. Sadly, it just takes a VERY long time.
