I understand the frustrations people are having with the President and believe me, I share them. It’s no secret, his job is difficult and at times he’s forced to make decisions for the good of the country. This debt deal, was not good for the country. Nor was health care reform – which didn’t go as far as it should of, and don’t get me started on the lackadaisical manner in which he ended Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
Now as Americans, it is our job to make noise to tell the President how we feel. And I think we’re all doing a pretty good job of letting him know where we stand. But what I don’t understand is all these people standing up and proclaiming, “I’m not voting for you next year.”
OK, that is of course your right, but, um…who are you going to vote for?
Last Summer and Fall while many of my geeky political friends were engaged in the mid-term elections and the implications they were going to have, were screaming at the top of our lungs to get people to stop sitting on their hands and go vote to keep Democrats in Congress, many of you sat back and did nothing. You were trying to send the President a message that you were angry. We warmed you until we were blue in the face, and even then kept screaming that a Republican Congress would take the country backwards. Still, many of you chose not to listen, so while I’m not certainly not bragging, I need to ask a Sarah Palin-like question, how’s that teaching the President a lesson thing working out for you?
Where are the jobs the Republican’s swore up and down all last year they knew how to bring back to America and would? Where is the 24/7 dedication they promised to give to bring back the jobs they said the President was too busy doing other things to focus on? Where is the economic boom we were promised when they held Congress hostage until those ridiculous UNPAID FOR Bush Tax Cuts were extended? Again, not boasting, but it’s all RIGHT where we said they would be…nowhere.
Now again, I get the anger. I get that you feel like he’s not fighting for us. I get that you feel like he’s more worried about getting reelected than fighting for us. And all I can say to you is — after the lackluster support you gave last year can you blame him?
Don’t get me wrong…it burns my chaps to defend him, given that terrible Debt Ceiling bill he let the Republicans ram down our throats, but I’ll ask you again, who are you going to vote for? Mitt Romney? Michele Bachmann? Sarah Palin? To quote Jerry Seinfeld, “Good luck with all that.”
A united Democratic Party is what this President needs for all intense purposes to help WAKE HIM THE F*CK UP! He needs to feel our energy and wrath. He needs to know we’re mad as hell at his lack of leadership on issues that are important to all of us, because we know he can do better. But most important, he needs to know that like family, we may disagree with you and get mad as hell at you…but in there end we’ll be there for you.
THIS is how you get the President to get back to doing what needs to be done for the American people – lead. Lead us away from the people who want to continue to give tax breaks to those who don’t need them; lead us away from those who want tax loopholes to remain so executives can sit on wades of cash as they jet set across the country — while the unemployment ranks grow daily. Embolden the President to lead and fight these sorry individuals who truly don’t understand what it is to be a member of Government for THE PEOPLE.
Use your anger constructively. Make this President understand we’re in it with him all the way because the alternative — won’t give a damn about you or your family. They never have…and never will. From Ronald Reagan who 23 years ago thought the homeless were sleeping on grates “by choice,” to Orrin Hatch who this week said he believes the poor should do more to shrink the debt, not the rich. Now to be fair, Hatch did say the poorest, those facing poverty shouldn’t have to. But let’s face it folks, these people haven’t a clue as to what poverty is.
In the end I know…it’s a leap of faith to think the President will hear our anger and be boosted by our encouragement for him to roll up his sleeves and stand up for what is right, but we have to believe that if there’s anyone that can do it…it’s him.
