In his July 4th speech, Trump declared, “America will never be a communist country. Won’t happen. Communism is a loser and it always will be. The communist system is the opposite of the American system, and communism has never worked.”
Yesterday, his administration reportedly issued subpoenas to New York Times journalists following the newspaper’s reporting on alleged security concerns involving the new Air Force One.
The contrast raises an important question about the meaning of the American system. The First Amendment places freedom of speech and freedom of the press at the very foundation of our constitutional system.
Using government legal authority in response to intimidate journalistic reporting is a direct contradiction to the American system he was touting just a week ago.
His supporters, who post meme’s of elected officials they dislike (the Clinton’s, Mamdani, AOC, etc.) branding them communists, will support this action claiming national security concerns.
But like Trump…they just don’t get the American system.
